Yes, that is Bill with a Diet DP and a 'true to his 60's roots' Peace Sign on his helmet. As is almost always the case, these were the best two skiers on the mountain. Neither one even flinches at a steep pitch with wind-blown crud and a tight fit between rock and trees. Butter. Silk. Smooth as. Always.

Christmas Around the World 2011

Polly & I headed to Provo tonight to see Erin in Christmas Around the World at BYU. Lorin stayed in town with Bruce & went to watch our nieces in a children's orchestra concert. Erin did a great job & there were lots of amazing dancers! Polly only made it about 20 minutes into the show before falling asleep, but she did see one of Erin's dances. We saw Chad, Marie & family on the way out & took a quick picture. It was fun to see them & we all enjoyed the dances & watching Erin.

I spent a stormy Saturday hanging out in the garage. It took all day but I 'successfully' installed a 4'x16' storage rack over my garage door. For now it is the final resting place for some classic race skis before they are sacrificed into Adirondack chairs or coat racks.

Papa John's Antique Danish Telephone Finds a New Home

After John returned from his mission in Denmark he noticed that the phone at Twin Pine Ranch was from Denmark. Mom and dad had no idea at the time that the phone was from Denmark. Dad found this old phone at an Antique store in Salt Lake back in the early 50's. It was one of three similar old phones he once owned. Tonight the phone has a new home on the wall of John's office in their new home in Heber. If you look real close on the rotary dial, you can see Papa John's trademark label, 752-7236.

We had a full house for General Conference this year. Brian brought a group of 20 youth and leaders from Portland to stay with us Friday and Saturday night. Well before Occupy Wall Street, they occupied our basement. They arrive well after midnight on Friday, attending all three sessions on Saturday and then drove home Sunday.

Our close friends, Dan and Shauna Rasmussen also stayed with us. They found a room upstairs that worked. We decided to listen to the Sunday afternoon session on the radio and take a drive up American Fork Canyon/Alpine Loop/Cascade Springs. Hard to beat a nice fall day.

Speeding into Fall 2011 - LoToJa to TOU

With an early registration for LoToJa in April the endless winter seemed to hang on like a bad cramp. Shelly and I were not able to train on our bikes with wet weather but started running a bit more. It is far easier to run in the rain then to cycling but I’ll cover that in more depth later. That said, trail running seemed to occupy much of our late spring in preparation for the Logan Peak ultra trail run that was cut short because of the endless winter and too much snow blanketing the local peaks in late June.

As summer rolled on, our cycling increased in preparation for September 10th but our miles were not as many as last year due to the wet spring. Still, our climbing was in good form and things were shaping up for a good 206 mile ride while the cross training of running a few miles seemed to help. Coming into the last weeks of training Shelly signed us up for the Top of Utah marathon the week following LoToJa with the discloser of pulling out if a long run or the 206 miles a week before proved to be too much. We set a semi-schedule of long runs Tuesday morning and longer bike rides on Saturday mornings.

A few days prior to the “race” (I use that term loosely) Shelly must have been asked several dozen times if she was riding the “whole” thing. I don’t know why I find that so humorous.

Early Saturday the 10th rolled around we headed out in the before the sun in the 3rd group leaving at 5:51. Our lights were bright and the temperature seemed a bit warmer but not too bad. The first leg to Preston was faster than last year and without any issues. Near the false summit of the first climb I pulled a head a bit of Shelly leaving her to allow John to come up behind her with a push or two. (This extra effort by John may have cost him a 1st or 2nd place in his Cat 5 group so he had to settle for 3rd place but Shelly was very appreciative of the boost.) Shelly and her friend Brandi climbed Strawberry canyon well and we rolled into Montpelier at mile 80 in good time. Sam and McKinley were supporting their parents this year and were in good form with all the required supplies. The wind was a bit of an issues heading into the first climb and was also blowing against us as we rolled toward Geneva summit.The wind continued to be a pest as we stared up Salt River canyon looking for the third and final climb.

Shelly and I stayed together on Geneva and Salt River climbs. The last climb was not a fun place for me. The wind had stopped so the heat was taxing, the support cars were backed up and moving slow, my legs were tired and after 110 miles I was not in top form. Shelly on the other hand was feeling her oats and accelerated at the top to climb faster than her ol’ man. The only good wind of the day was the ten miles into Afton but soon after, the wind kicked up from the NE and we battled until Alpine.

After our final stop in Alpine and a few more drugs we were back on the bikes for the final 50 mile push. Snake River canyon was typical, cool and visually the best part of the ride. I’m not a fan of the last six miles but this time it seemed to roll by quicker and we finished about 30 minutes faster than last year. How cool was that… and my legs didn’t even cramp once.

In 2009 I was happy to complete both 206 cycling miles and 26.2 running miles a week apart. Shelly for some reason thought that sounded fun so we were half way to our goal. Trying to keep it under wraps we didn’t talk about running the Top of Utah, primarily in case we decided to not run because of fatigue or lack of motivation. This way we wouldn’t have to explain why we DNS (did not start). On Monday Shelly came down with a cold (illness is the other reason we would choose not to run) and so began a week of intense vitamin C, Dr Pepper and Motrin doping. Soon Shelly had a sore a throat, stomach pains and fatigue from the previous weeks effort.

After reading an article in the SLC Tribune about “DNF” (did not finish) Shelly bucked up and set the alarm for 4:20 for the second week in a row. Saturday morning brought temps in the mid 40’s and a light drizzle of fall rain. We boarded the school bus about 5:20 and watch the rain fall until we got to Hardware Ranch. We had a jovial chat with Bill and other educators including that Isom Boy. Then five minutes before start, rain! This was a cloud burst that lasted about 4 minutes and ended just in time to line up for the mass start.

A few miles into the run another cloud burst came drenching all the runners. Unlike the snow during 2000 the rain kept us cool but not freezing. The sun popped out again and so did the humidity (not as humid as Illinois I sure) but a bit uncomfortable none the less. Thinking the storms were clearing we settled into the scenic run down the canyon.

Pace-Runners; please make sure your group is spread across the entire road so faster runners cannot pass. Check!

Mr. Duffus in the old dodge truck with a Beaver and Alta sticker: please don’t weave in and out of the runners, just pick a lane and go slow (or take a nap for an hour till all the runners our out the canyon).

Muscle Man in the way-too-short shorts telling everyone good job, running at different speeds, splashing in the puddles, and reading motivational signs; we get it, you need attention.

Flashes of lightning and the thunder started to roar again. We were still in the canyon at about mile 11 and here came the rain. After a few minutes the Gatorade a runner spilled on my leg was washed off and my feet were wet and fingers were pruney. Almost out of the canyon and the hail started to pelt us. “Ouch!” I said out loud as one pea sized frozen morsel hit my ear. Another few minutes and the rain slowed as Shelly and I ran out of the canyon.

Five ladies in skimpy black and pink tank-tops all dressed alike: how was the hail storm? BTW get with Muscle Man because you all require the same attention.

Aid Station Volunteers; Thanks for standing in the middle of the road handing out drinks. I would never think to go to the side of the road for a cup of water.

I spotted Bob talking on the phone about mile 14 and he rolled along side of us. Shelly’s stomach was acting up and she was not a happy camper at this time. We took it slow down Hollow Road in Nibley. We left Bob as he turned around in search of his favorite daughter.

McKinley, Alex and Sam were at mile 18 with fresh treats and drinks. We stopped for a few minutes and dropped off our layering clothes heavy with rain. Now lighter, fed and revived Shelly decided to take it up a notch. We cruised into Millville running the road we so often train on. During the slight downhill into Providence once again, “Bamb” Shelly took it up another notch.

A quick stop with the kids in Providence at mile 21 and we were off. Shelly didn’t even stop to say high to her mother as we ran by her home but we did exchange greetings. Normally I start to dive into a funk during these miles but I was too focused on trying to hang with Shelly. No one really knew she had biked 206 miles the week before but I started to let some spectators know. Maybe they cared or not but it gave me more motivation and a bit of satisfaction at the same time to say “She road 206 miles last week in LoToJa!!”

The last 3 miles we clocked in faster each mile not even stopping at the traditional Tabernacle spectator zone. 11:03, 10:18 and 9:45 pace respectively (average pace for the day 9:31). Speeding up during the final miles, that’s a first…. Officially finishing in 4:24:26, Shelly’s second fastest marathon, and I didn’t even cramp once. Summer is complete; my pre ski conditioning will start soon and here’s not hoping for an endless summer.

New Life to an Old Picnic Table

One of my favorite items we inherited from Annie's mom was her redwood picnic table. We have a ton of fun memories of sitting 'round the picnic table in her back yard. After two years of neglect on our back patio, I finally found the time and energy to refinish the table. First I sanded it down and removed all of the old stain then applied 3 or 4 new coats of stain. It turned out great. Those who are going to come over for the Tour of Utah mixed grill Sunday at 2:00 will have a chance to see for your self.

Papa John's Tahoe Tree Straightening Service

Not sure how to straighten the one tree that has fallen victim to the wind and is listing at about 10 degrees?

Step 1 Back the Tahoe up to the leaning tree

Step 2 Soak the ground at the base of the tree with water then secure heavy duty nylon straps to the trunk of the tree and the Tahoe

Step 3. Put the Tahoe in Low 4X4 and slowly pull the tree foward

Step 4. Get out of the Tahoe and snap a photo of the tree that is now standing straight.

Step 5. Leave Tahoe parked in the scrub oak strapped to the tree for the next 3-4 weeks, enjoy the strange looks from the neighbors and then pray the winds hold off for a few months. So far, so good.

Red Head Appreciation Day!

Yesterday was "Redhead Appreciation Day" at the South Jordan Marble Slab Creamery. They were introducing their new Red Velvet flavor, so all redheads were promised free ice cream for coming in. The Red Velvet flavor, only. We met Mary, Emily, Jamie, Camilla & Carly for a taste. A "taste" is about all they got! The "free" ice cream was one scoop in a small sample cup! It was really good, just not very much...especially for the Lundberg's that had to drive up from Mapleton & ended up getting lost on the way! It was fun to see everyone & laugh about the small portions. Polly, who threw a mini-fit about getting red ice cream when she wanted pink, got lucky when Bruce wanted her red ice cream & Mary bought her some strawberry. Thanks Mary! I think most of us ended up with a red stain on our shirts, too :)

Real Salt Lake - Real Fun

FC Dallas vs. Real Salt Lake: Soccer fever. Great way to spend a nice summer's eve. Laura, Clark, and J.D. were the real Real fans, sporting team jerseys.

Our section was picked for some free RSL stuff and the younger crowd scored with some soccer balls. None looked better handling the ball than Nash.

As a anniversary gift to Nick and Adrienne, RSL decided that a home win would be a good thing. The happy couple was most appreciative.

With RSL in control, Ryan took a moment to school Chance and Max on the finer points of small ball control.

Additional family fun occurred when Lorie and I (Katie was relaxing at Lake Powell with the sisters) visited with Sam at Jackson Hole. She even humored us by following along for a hike to Phelps Lake.

Part of the family fun was watching, from a safe distance, three grizzly cubs frolicking a few miles below Jackson Lake Lodge. Mom was busy scratching her back on a nearby power pole. My camera lens wasn't up to the distance but you get the idea.

Logan Peak Trail Run

Shelly lunging across one of several run off crossings on the way up Dry Canyon. Although the race was cut short and didn't summit Mt. Logan because of too much snow we had a great time. I would rather have a fantastic year of skiing then not... thanks mother nature.

The toughest part of the climb... Scott Datwyler shoveled the path the day before. It was very slick and hard to walk let alone run on. The descent was a little fast and more out of control.

A view looking across the top of the canyon to the north facing slope. During a normal snow year the race cuts across the face looking left to right. The race officials said it was too difficult to cross and cur the course short. I think they were right unless we had skis... and a lift.

The race was made to an up and back. This was at the turn around point looking north with the Tony Groove peaks in the background.

On the way down I couldn't stop Shelly.... on the other had (or feet) my legs were a bit slow(er).
But we finished the Logan Peak 28 mile - Ultra Marathon - cut short due to snow (only 11 miles)

Sunday May 29th at the Brigham City Cemetery in front of the graves of Bill and Veara Fife. Their Daughter Norda in the center is surround by her five sons (sorry you couldn't make it Mary) and their wives, children and grandchildren. Bill Fife served in France during WWI.

Last Friday (April 29th, 2011) Erin participated in a mock DUI accident at Charleston High School. Fortunately, it was pretend but she does make a cute zombie.

On a much happier note, the next day she ran the Illinois Half marathon in Chambana in 2:18

You can see Erin and her fleshy dad finishing the half-marathon. Jake, in orange enters to the right of the picture with Erin, in white, to his side.

After the half marathon we hurried back to Chucktown so Erin could get ready for prom that night.

The Charleston High School production of Oklahoma started the following Wednesday. Erin played Ellen one of Laurey's friends.

Ready for Church on Easter Sunday. Our Easter decorations include a crown of thorns from Jerusalem, a model of the Garden Tomb and eggs from Krakow Poland.

Ben, Courtney and cute Clara joined us for church and dinner. They didn't tell us it was their anniversary. All of the Lundbergs also came for dinner, but I forgot to take photos.

The deer have devoured all our tulips and pansies, leaving just one single crocus with which to celebrate spring. Adrienne and Laura, recognizing that our yard could use more color, flocked us Saturday morning with pink flamingoes in support of the Child and Family Support Center. Oblivious as usual, I retrieved the newspaper from the front steps while they were flocking and didn't notice a thing.

Then it was off for some soccer. Max and Chance play on the same team, coached by Tyler, and the boys seem to be getting the basics down pretty well. They can certainly pose for a pre-game photo pretty well.

Koebe and Jaxson, who are teammates as well, are also pretty skilled, each scoring a goal for their team.

After morning soccer fun, it was back to the house for some burgers, salads, and desserts. The weather cooperated enough for some relaxation on the deck.

Then came time for the Easter treat hunt. Nash, undaunted by raspberry canes, grabs hold of her prize.

Jack seems to have found almost more than he can handle.

What better way to celebrate a successful Easter Egg hunt than among our friends the flamingoes.

We end the day with the traditional "rolling of the colored eggs" from atop College Hill, followed shortly by the traditional "dodging of the seagulls scavanging egg parts" from College Hill.

Good times. Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter weekend as well.

John is coaching Jack's 6 and under team - which is also known as Jack and the four cute girls. The game is played 3 on 3 with no goalie. This game had all the drama you would expect from 4 and 5 year olds. Own goals, hand balls, shin guards on the outside of the socks, wrong way runs, stealing the ball from teammates and more. A ton of fun.

Five days before his 11th birthday Alex skied his first decent of No-Name at Snowbasin with his uncle Bill and Bob and cousin John, a 10 minute hike is required to get to the avalanche controlled ski area. Next year we'll look for a warm spring day that is not on conference weekend for the 2nd Annual Papa John's Family Fun Ski-In-Ski-Out Grill Extravaganza. Earlier in the day Clark (aka Big Alex) said to Alex (aka Little Clark) something like, "While the grown-ups eat we can build a jump". Can't argue that Clark is young at heart!

I can't edit these short films taken with my phone but you get the idea. For the last Saturday in March, 2011 it was sure soft skiing on the backside of Beaver. We hiked to 1st peak twice to enjoy the fresh turns.

A quick solo trip to Snowbird on Saturday. When I dropped into Mineral Basin on Lone Star the Powder Shots guy was camped out and snapped a dozen photos of me. It was about 9:30 so there were not many takers because it is pretty steep and the snow was still pretty hard. I found my legs are only good for 3 hours when there is a high speed quad providing the transportation. I skied close to 15 runs in 3 hours and went home to recover on a 3 hour bike ride. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday.

A few weeks ago, John, Beth, Kristin and I took advantage of a free cross country ski day at Mountain Dell Golf Course mid-way between SLC and Park City in Parley's canyon. Several local retailer provided free rental gear and local instructors provided a free 45 minute lesson. We had a great time and are ready to place our order at Norda's for Christmas 2011.

Here is a recap of our crazy fun birthday weekend with Polly!

Happy Birthday Polly! When she woke up on her birthday we had cinnamon rolls for breakfast & opened presents.

Probably her favorite present this year! We got her a used camera off of KSL & she has been a picture taking machine ever since!

After breakfast & presents we got ready for some pictures with the Fotheringham cousins. Bruce was not having it (as usual) but the photographer was really good & got him to at least sit by Polly.

Here is the group shot with everyone. This was the first picture so Bruce wasn't too upset yet. I think Polly looks absolutely crazy, the photographer had her laughing so hard!

After pictures we met up with one of Polly's friends to go see Tangled (I guess I didn't take any pictures :( We didn't do a party with friends this year, she just chose to take one friend to the movies. We loved it (again!) & went to Chick-fil-a for dinner after.

Polly wanted to go skating for her birthday!! So Saturday afternoon we headed over to the Olympic Oval.

I started reading old family letters from October '91-January '93 and it was very entertaining. I thought I would share some fun things I found while reading! The family letters I read were from 19 years ago, so it will be fun to go back and read our family letters in 19 more years.

October '91 Letters

"One sad thing that occurred was that we had to put Kastle to sleep for good. He started biting the neighbors. So we didn't think that would be to good to have all our neighbors hate us even though we don't even know them very well and they come over once a month to ask for $20.00. -- Shelly (sounds like Tom & Shelly had top notch neighbors)

"The stairwell is decorated with red wall paper adorned with bubbly champagne glasses and pink dancing elephants"

Grandma has had a few relatives ask about her jean quilts and if she has a pattern for them. She doesn't have a specific pattern, but cuts the jeans into squares (4X4, 5X5,6X6 or 7X7). After all the jeans are cut she will lay them out and decide how to arrange them and how big to make the actual quilt. Once they are arranged to her liking she starts sewing them together row by row.

Grandma gets creative and does a pattern starting with dark jeans and moving to light jeans and then repeats pattern. This quilt was also tied every other square.

She mentioned it is hard to do pockets on the outsides because of the binding. So if you choose to use pockets keep them in the center of the blanket.

Friday night was the company party held at Rice Eccles Stadium at the University of Utah. The room was set up for a sit down dinner for 316 guests. Following dinner we had a comedian and the evening ended by 9:30.

"Brush and Floss Your Teeth" That is the message Grandma wants to tell each one of us. Mom went in for three teeth implants but Dr Anderson could only put one post in her front top tooth and had to do two bone graphs for the others on her left side. Those implants will be done in about three months. As pictured her chin is swollen bruised but she is doing well.

Many, if not most, of the mid-ship-men in WWII that used Radar (one of the key technologies that won the war) could trace their training back to Elliot who taught Radar techniques at Harvard, MIT and Princeton during the war.

Grandpa's Headstone

Katie and I were on our way to Beaver Mountain offices for our season pass photo and decided to drive by to see if Grandpa's headstone was standing tall and lo and behold, it was. Katie's cell phone captures the look, but the color's a bit blue. In better light it looks really good. The first photo also captures the approaching storm front on the other side of the valley. The Beav opens December 3, so any and all who can join with us on December 4 (Saturday) for a corduroy run or two in honor of posse member Papa John will be welcomed.

After a fun Friday night, Annie and I packed up and left beautiful Innsbruck for an indirect route to Zurich which included driving back through the Austrian Alps back into Southern Germany to see the Neuschwanstein and Hoherschwangau Castles. We passed by several ski areas including Garmisch, home of the 1936 Olympics and hopeful host of the 2018 Olympics.

Project Super Quilt

Remember Super Spence? My friend Holly (Spencer's mom) started a project called, "Project Super Quilt," to help out the kids at Primary Children's Hospital. She has so many people asking what they can do to help since Spencer was diagnosed with cancer in February. She says this is it! Spencer is doing great on his treatments & his last MRI showed his mass as probably nothing but scar tissue (a PET scan in a few weeks will show for sure) - yay!! Everyone is so happy with the test results, it's the best news they could possibly hear!! SPencer is looking forward to being done with treatments & evaluations in March & heading to DisneyWorld with Make-A-Wish in May! Volleyball Champion

Sarah and the other amazing young women of the Spring Creek 18th ward won the regional (they don't use that term any more, but that is what it really was) volleyball tournament tonight. They played five teams and only lost one of the 11 games in the five sets in a tiring five hours of playing and waiting. Sarah is a much improved player this year and (much to her often surprise) was able to more often than not serve and bump the ball over the net. She is still a little reluntant to go after the ball, but it was all a good enough expereince that she plans to play church ball again next year (not the same for city league volleyball which is too intense and winning focused). Marie and I tag teamed watching her games. In betweeen the boys and I watched a nice movie: Sign of the Beaver. I'm sure part of the reason the girls were able to do so well is that half way through the long evening, Marie went and bought a big bag of Sour Patch candy for the girls to eat.

Friday night in Innsbruck

Annie decided to join me for a week in and around Germany. Today I had a meeting near Munich and afterwards Annie and I drove south to check out Innsbruck. We had a great time cruising the Christmas shops in the downtown plaza. Tomorrow we leave for Zurich, then turn north on Sunday to Cologne so that I can attend a meeting in Holland on Monday and another meeting north of Frankfurt on Tuesday before we return home just in time for Turkey Day.

This is what I wanted to say tonight, but Jay Monson said do you want to say thanks ? I didn't dare take the time for my little talk.

In 1958 we moved to Cache Valley, we found a house in Providence and John served on the City Council. He saw one of the older men in town building a house and told the older gentleman he would need to buy a building permit. The man said he wouldn't. John told him the law said he had to get a building permit and he told John that his grandparents were some of the first settlers in Providence and he absolutely would not buy a building permit. He walked away and I'm not sure how the story ended.
About 5 years ago he came home from a meeting, he was so tired and discouraged. I told him that he was nearly 80 and why didn't he just quit. He said that he said he would serve on that committee and that he wouldn't quit. It made me think of Horton the Elephant. Horton promised Mazey the Lazy Bird that he would sit on her egg 'til it hatched. Horton sat through bad weather, hunters with guns, people who teased him etc. All Horton would say is, "I meant what I said and I said what I meant, an elephant is faithful 100%" This reminds me of John, "He meant what he said and he said what he meant John Emmett has integrity and loves Logan 100%."
